Student Stories – Bhavesh Bhagwanji

Bhavesh Bhagwanji

I am a 3rd Year Business and Finance Student. Aside from academic commitments, I also participate in numerous activities in the university.

I joined the Badminton society as I had played a little prior to joining Uni. Most people tend to join societies and clubs in order to make more friends as you are most likely to share common interests with the other students.

At university, I host a radio show on Siren FM which is called Lincolnomics. This is a radio show about how Lincolnshire operates as an economy and how businesses choose to run in and around Lincoln. I have hosted this show for just over 3 years now and it has proven to be quite popular as it got backing from the Pro Vice Chancellor of the Lincoln Business School, Dr Craig Marsh. As I mentioned previously I am part of the Badminton Society which meet once a week for a 2-hour session of badminton which is to be noted that it’s not competitive. I am also part of the Lincoln Business School Mentor scheme where I am being mentored by a trained Accountant who works for Wright Vigar. I am currently part of a Staff-Student insight scheme which allows me to shadow the CFO of the University which involves going to meetings etc. and then he visits my lectures and seminars to see aspects of the university which he may not have seen. I have been a course rep for 3 years now up to including now for Business and Finance.

I also work for LincHigher which is an organisation aimed to raise aspirations of students in Lincolnshire who may not see further education as an option. We do various talks and outreach vents

The key to managing all these activities is time-management. By prioritising academic and extra-curricular commitments, you are able to manage all these things at once. Not only is this helpful at university, but also moving forward in your careers you will experience tough time frames in which deadlines have to be met. For me having a diary is very important as there is only so much you can manage on a mobile device.

At university, it is really important to make sure you set yourself apart from everyone else in your cohort. In the long run, they are the people who will be competing against you for graduate jobs, by participating in all these extra things you are able to not only gain a lot of skills but also able to differentiate yourself from your peers.

My drive and passion for success stem from my parents and how hard they have worked to get me to where I am now as well as my upbringing. I have always been a logical thinker as well as having open-minded views on always learning. Placing the very foundation to motivate me on a daily basis reinforces my goals to succeed.

Going forward, I aspire to become a commercial pilot, which has always been a childhood dream for me. I started flying from a young age and got my Private Pilot’s license last year which firmed my decision going forward after university. The reason I chose to do Business Finance at university was that I always had a passion and drive for business but also it has helped me develop as a student and gain key skills for my future such as analytical and financial skills. It is important to cement your decision for your future as it can help set a path of the various goals and objectives you want to achieve.
