Sian, a BSc (Hons) Business Psychology graduate, shares her experience studying at Lincoln International Business School, and what her course involved.
What is your full name?
Sian Evie Wainwright
What undergraduate degree did you study?
BSc Business Psychology
Why did you choose your undergraduate course and why Lincoln in particular?
I chose my course because I had always been interested in studying business, however Psychology was one of my strengths at school. When reading into the course I realised that Business Psychology was the perfect route for me into studying business as it explores the individuals behind what makes organisations thrive. The course also had a nice combination between business and psychology modules to test my strengths in different areas and continue my learning across two subjects.
I chose the University of Lincoln because I come from a small village, where my time in education previous to university was spent in small schools where everybody knows everybody and when visiting the city and University, I got a similar feeling. Everything about Lincoln seemed homely to me and I could picture myself thriving in the city. Additionally, the city itself was bustling with culture and excitement, everywhere is within walking distance and you have the perfect mix of old and new.
Describe the course in five words…
Exciting, Eye-opening, Challenging, Compelling, Unforgettable.
Did you undertake a work placement year?
No, my course does not offer one yet.
What did the course involve?
The course involved an array of modules taught both by the School of Psychology and Lincoln International Business School. Many of these modules are self-selected allowing me to tailor the degree to suit my needs. The teaching took the form of seminars, lectures, workshops and at-home learning, a structure that allowed me to learn the theory and then apply the theory in a smaller setting to ensure I fully understood the theory of the module. There were also opportunities to work alone and in a group which aided my communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
What did the course teach you?
The psychology modules looked at different areas of psychology from behaviour to language to cross-cultural psychology. The business modules looked at different areas of business from human resource management to marketing to team dynamics. Therefore, the course taught me a lot about a large amount of different areas within both business and psychology, this was especially helpful as it allowed me to explore my options for the future whilst learning.
Was the course well connected to relevant employers?
Yes, throughout my three years studying Business Psychology, I have worked with different companies to solve current issues facing their organisations. These experiences have given me multiple opportunities to ask relevant questions on employment and have intellectual conversations about continuing my education and what a job as an Occupational Psychologist is truly like. Additionally, presenting to real-world employers allowed me to practice my interview and presentation skills in a very realistic situation.
Were you part of any societies and / or sports teams?
Yes, I have been a member of the Lincoln Roos, the trampolining sports team at the University of Lincoln. An opportunity I could not be more thankful for as it allowed me to create a close group of friends whilst learning new skills. I urge any future student to become a part of a society as it truly immerses you in the student experience and shows you more sides to the University of Lincoln.
What are your career ambitions?
My career ambitions are to continue my education and complete my PGCE with QTS with hopes of becoming a teacher that inspires a new generation to enjoy school and university and show them that any dream can be achieved if you set your mind and heart to it.
What do you wish you’d known before embarking on undergraduate study?
I wish I’d have known how important my peers would be to me throughout my time at university, surrounding myself with amazing friends on my course and on my society has helped me to make the most out of my university experience. Having a good group of friends around me to help me through the stressful days but also elevate the fun days has been lifesaving.
What tips would you give to others choosing an undergraduate degree?
My biggest piece of advice is to choose something you’ll enjoy, and you have a passion for, listen to yourself over others. You’re at university and focusing on one subject for a long time and having a deep passion for that subject will make it a lot easier, you want to enjoy your time in and out of teaching hours and you will do so if you choose something you’re interested in learning about.
What has been the highlight of your time at Lincoln International Business School?
My highlight was in the summer before going into third year, where I had the opportunity to fly to Malaysia and spend over two weeks learning about my course and business at KDU University College, whilst exploring the beautiful state of Penang. I got to swim in a waterfall, learn Malay, eat Malaysian street food, ride jet skis and much more all whilst gaining a deeper knowledge of international business and business psychology in Malaysia. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and one I would not have been able to take part in if it wasn’t for Lincoln International Business School, I cannot thank them enough.
