Postgraduate Students Successfully Make Profit in University Business Challenge

Five postgraduate students from Lincoln International Business School, competing in the UBC Global Masters Business Challenge, are celebrating being the only team out of their group of five universities to successfully make a profit.

The UBC Global Masters Business Challenge is a business simulation consisting of five virtual trading periods, which are then followed by the grand final, where the top teams compete against each other.

In November, in trading period two, the University of Lincoln team –  the Lincoln Swans – were the only group who successfully made a profit, of over £1.5 million, with all other teams making a loss of between £1.2 million and £3.4 million.

The challenge is a learning experience that enables students to improve their decision-making skills, develop their team-working abilities and increase their knowledge in key business areas such as marketing, finance, and production.

Besides the experience and prestige of progressing through the competition, the competing students are awarded a personalised Certificate of Participation and achievement through each round of the challenge.

Participation in the challenge can really help students at placement or job interview stages of their careers – signalling to potential employers that they have engaged in a challenging event that has significantly developed their employability skills and the specific competencies that employers value in graduate recruits.

Taking part in the challenge this year are teams from DeMontfort University, Nottingham Trent University, Anglia Ruskin University, Sheffield Hallam University plus many more.

Maren Wolff, Lincoln International Business School Global Experiences Administrator, said: “It is the second year that I am supporting our LIBS team during the UBC Global Masters Challenge.

“Despite the challenging circumstances this year, the team is doing particularly well and has managed to make a profit early on in the competition. We are very proud of our team’s performance and are sure that they will continue to excel throughout the challenge.”
