Why I wanted to do a Master’s and how it’s been so far
The idea of doing a Master’s degree has always been in the back of my mind somehow, given my parents constantly encouraged me to go for one. This being said, it was not until I started my professional practice year that I realised the value and importance of a postgraduate degree. The company I interned with was one that I saw myself working for upon graduation. However, I noticed quickly that if you ever want to be considered for a more senior position, or simply remain competitive in the industry, a Master’s is often not only desired but expected of you.
This put pressure on me to find a programme that would help me stand out, but most importantly engage and challenge me beyond what I already learned and experienced at undergraduate level, studying International Tourism Management. On top, I knew in order for me to thrive, it needed to be something I was really passionate about.
When flipping through Lincoln’s Postgraduate Prospectus I found out about the MSc Management and International Relations programme at the Lincoln International Business School. I haven’t seen a course like this before, where elements of politics, history, current affairs and business management practices were combined in one. While I was sold on the course already, I met with the programme leader to discuss my plans further and only felt more assured about my decision after.
The topics we cover in our modules are current across the board and we are constantly encouraged to think critically and dig deeper at all times, taking different stands and looking at issues from various perspectives. While the workload did increase compared to what I was used to during my undergrad, I found the transition to become a PG student much smoother than anticipated. I am convinced the amazingly supportive, motivated and dynamic staff at the Lincoln International Business School is largely responsible for that, always going the extra mile from week one to ensure we are all on board and no one is left behind.
My course requires to not only be aware of several international perspectives but also actively consider and examine these. With that in mind the cultural diversity within my cohort it is really a gift and definitely one of the greatest strength of this programme. I love the various points of view my course mates from different backgrounds and cultures across the globe are able to offer. They are a fantastic group of people who I consider myself lucky enough to have met.
Another thing I love about my PG at the University of Lincoln is that whilst it challenges you academically, there is still the time, opportunity and encouragement to get involved and therefore boost your personal and professional growth massively outside of the classroom. For example, I have decided to pursue my passion for academic representation this year, taking on the role of PGT Officer which allows me to represent my fellow PGT students’ interests, views and voices on a university wide level. Further, I joined the Business Society which has really helped creating a true community among business students across different years by hosting a great variety of events every month.
