BA (Hons) Accountancy and Finance graduate, Alexander, shares his experience studying at Lincoln International Business School, and his tips for choosing the right course.
Why did you choose your undergraduate course and why Lincoln in particular?
I’d had some results which weren’t quite as good as I’d hoped they’d be in AS-level Economics and decided that this wasn’t the path I wanted to go down at university.
I had always been interested in business and the more I looked at accountancy the more interesting it seemed to get!
The course at Lincoln had really high course satisfaction, seemed supportive, friendly and very up and coming. There was also the option to do a placement which I was really keen on.
What did you enjoy most about your chosen course?
I enjoyed learning a challenging subject that was completely new to me and had lots of real-life application. I also had some really good course mates who I’m still in touch with.
The academic staff knew you by name, were really supportive and very approachable.
Describe the course in five words…?
An excellent foundation for my career.
What were the positive aspects of your course on you and your chosen career?
I’m a lot more confident and outgoing since going to university. I also had a really good foundation for when I started my professional studies.
Did you undertake a work placement year?
Yes, at Volkswagen Group (UK) Ltd where I worked as a Finance Assistant.
Have you secured graduate employment? Tell us about your role, your employer and your responsibilities?
I was fortunate enough to secure employment with a local firm of Chartered Accountants, where I am studying for my joint ACA CTA qualifications.
I work with many owner-managed businesses advising them about their tax affairs and am given lots of autonomy in my role.
Were you part of any societies and / or sports teams?
No.
What advice would you give to someone else looking at your course?
Accountancy is a practical subject – you must practice outside the classroom! Try and discipline yourself to keep up with the work, otherwise you’ll soon get lost.
What tips would you give to others choosing an undergraduate degree?
Try to find something that you’ll really like doing that will translate into a career at the end. The best bit of advice I was given on this matter was “do a degree with a job named after it”.
Do you have any further comments about the course, your School or the University?
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at Lincoln.
