During the first week of July, 20 undergraduate and postgraduate Lincoln International Business School students from a range of different programmes joined staff from the Global Experiences Team on a fantastic, activity-packed week in Edinburgh, Scotland for the last LIBS100 trip of this academic year.
LIBS100 is a funded scheme that allows students to enhance their global mindset, connect with the global community and engage with international experts. These popular visits, organised by the LIBS Global Experience Team are themed to sit within UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to align with business and sustainability. Lots of students applied for this opportunity, demonstrating via application how the experience would relate to their area of study, along with links to SDGs.
In keeping with the sustainability focus, themed activities were organised including a visit to Edinburgh Zoo where the group learned about environmental impact, how they incorporate sustainability and their contribution to tourism.
Other places of interest included Edinburgh Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Real Mary King’s Close – the ‘underground city of Edinburgh’ and how, in days gone by, occupiers of the city dealt with the plague, which provided a comparison with the COVID19 pandemic everyone faces today. Students enjoyed a guided tour to Arthur’s Seat by the Ranger Service from Historic Environment Scotland, which included a business-specific theme of sustainability through tourism. The last day provided a visit to Dynamic Earth, a learning centre which focuses on how the earth was formed and what we can do now to protect it.
As you’ll see from their feedback, students found the trip thoroughly enjoyable, and insightful. Here’s what they had to say :
“I had a good experience visiting all the places…it felt like a vacation and also a seminar all wrapped in one. I wasn’t just having fun, I was learning at the same time. What else would anyone need to hone his or her skills if not for such a trip? If you want to grow, you have to go….every student should jump at such an opportunity as you’ll be surprised at how much you’ve learnt and improved after the trip.”
“I learnt so much about management of national historical sites by NGO’s. This topic had been covered in one of my modules: Community Organisation, Development and Sustainability. I had a chance to deeply explore issues such as revenue generation, volunteer management and sustainable preservation of the Holyrood Park education centre….some of the professional skills I’ve gained: teamwork and collaboration, time management, reflective thinking and interpersonal skills.”
